The Architecture of the defense system in the Aragonese age of the “Terra di Capitanata”. History and surveys of the military architecture in Daunia

Abstract

The research activity here reported, study the influences that have had the Iberian skilled workers on the forms of architectural expression in the south of Italy. In this context, we focused on the defensive structures of Daunia and more generally in the “Terra di Capitanata”, corresponding nowadays the province of Foggia, in Apulia. Numerous studies have been conducted on the defensive structures , the typological, architectural features, the construction phases and the techniques used, but the individual structures were investigated as separate entities, and not as components of a system organic and functional for safety of settlements and roads (large paths “tratturi”). The present research concerns the analysis of the whole defensive system, by relating the local context to urban centers, and to centers of agricultural and pastoral activities (“Dogana delle Pecore”).
