Abstract

The present issue of “Health and Society”, edited by Carmine Clemente and Remo Siza on behalf of SISS (Italian Society of Health Sociology), is dedicated to social innovation, a fundamental topic when it comes about discussing the new welfare systems in Europe. Social innovation is a new paradigm aimed at changing and improving intervention, products and services by means of innovative solutions and ideas. In literature, there are many definitions of social innovation. Its contours are blurred and we have not yet completely understood what innovation means and which processes the term social makes reference to. Therefore, implementing social innovation - as well as identifying priorities and peculiarities - is a complex task. Nonetheless, many experiences related to social innovation highlight the existence of new organizational instruments and new forms of access to health services. The experiences reported in this issue point at some worries concerning the possible side effects of social innovation in a world that is more and more concerned with financial sustainability. At the same time, the authors recognize the need for innovation, new technology, new ideas and new professional and social relations in healthcare systems with a particular focus on Italy and the UK. Innovation, technology, ideas: these are the instruments that could be able to mobilize support and find the right solution to problems that have been considered as unsolvable so far.
