Abstract

The essay suggests a link between the rise of a post-modern idea of nation, which dispenses with conflict and discontinuity, and the demise of the history of the State during the celebrations. The author suggests that the celebrations had political purposes which have affected historical writing. The essay reviews several conferences and exhibitions dealing with the idea of Italian history. It seems that new research paths emerge out of the development of cultural history. The author concludes with considerations for the future tasks of Italian contemporary history.
