Abstract

Conceived and set in the midst of the eighties, Mario Luzi’s third play sheds light on the rift that writhes in the Florentine author’s writing : just as his collections of poems become metaphysical and sublime again, his plays and public speeches get even more entangled with the civilian motions that had overwhelmingly burst out in the Sixties. The double need for a literature that, though independent, is committed to real life (which also reflects the distinction between the laws of art and the author’s contingency) is at the heart of this ‘unexploded tragedy’and its ineffable leading character.
