Abstract

The cultural contaminations in the Mediterranean. The Maltese archipelago case The subject treated describes the urban settlement of the Maltese archipelago main cities and analyzes the complex phenomenon of the cultural-architectural contamination, which it is produced by the cohesion-fusion, not always useful, with that civilizations that made waves in the Mediterranean over time. Mdina and Victoria, both of which consist of a citadel and a Rabato, testify to the original relationship that has been established with the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans, subsequently hybridized by that established with the Arabs, which was superimposed by the "Nordic" Norman-Swabian component, than changed, during the XVI century, thanks to the Knights of St. John that will build Valletta, adhering to the speculations about the ideal city that were reached in that historical phase.
