Abstract

Riassunto: Nel presente contributo è illustrata la figura del sicofante, quale emerge da riferimenti, allusioni e metafore ricorrenti presso gli oratori attici di V-IV sec. a.C.: le distorsioni delle attività legali dei sicofanti trovano larga eco nei discorsi retorici, che consentono alla critica moderna una piú complessa e articolata riflessione sugli effetti che tali distorsioni produssero nel contesto sociale e culturale della polis; in tribunale, associare il proprio avversario al temuto sicofante poteva costituire, di fatto, una molto efficace forma di attacco personale. Abstract: The present paper aims to highlight the hostile character of the sykophant as it appears from references, allusions and metaphors found in forensic oratory in the fifth and fourth century B.C. The historical, legal and social figure of the sykophant has been deformed by the caricatural portrait realized by Greek oratory, and his negative aspects have been often exasperated. This point allows us to understand the effects produced by a similar distortion on cultural and social context of the polis: to associate the name of an opponent with the sykophant in a law court could mean an effective and convincing personal attack.
