Abstract

“Empty threats, vain hopes: Islam and the duration of hell”. This essay has two objectives. The first is to present an overview of the Islamic debate over the eternity of hell from the formative period to the later middle ages. The second is to bring to the fore the significance of this eschatological debate for Islam’s self-definition, suggesting possible venues for comparison with the notion of “temporary hell” in other religious traditions. The essay engages with earlier and recent studies on Islamic eschatology, and investigates a wide range of primary sources. In the final part of the essay, the most relevant of these primary sources are translated from Arabic and annotated in full.
