Lo scienziato sociale e il medico condotto nell'Italia postunitaria: Cosimo De Giorgi e Guido Mugnaini
Abstract
After the Italian unification, ruling classes were called not only to administer the new structures of power in the country, but also to contribute, with their different backgrounds, to the nation building and the education of citizens. Two young graduates in medicine and surgery, trained in the Tuscan academic and cultural context, followed two different paths in their profession, at the service of the society and of the «new Italy». Based on an unpublished private correspondence, this paper reconstructs the professional paths of the two friends, their life plans and aspirations to contribute to the country's civil and social transformation through their work. Guido Mugnaini was a doctor in small towns between Pisa and Livorno, while Cosimo De Giorgi was a scientist, and a prominent character of the education and cultural life in Southern Italy.
