La religione islamica in epoca moderna

Abstract

“Islamic religion in the early modern period”. This book chapter has been written by two scholars of Islamic religious history, Biancamaria Scarcia Amoretti and Samuela Pagani, specializing, respectively, on Iran and the Arab Near East. The interaction of these two fields of enquiry has seemed necessary in order to present an overall picture of the early modern religious history of the Middle East, which has been characterized by a process of confessionalization, the outcome of which was the "shi'itization" of Iran under Safavid rule, and the "sunnitization" of the Near East under Ottoman rule. The section of the paper written by Samuela Pagani presents an overview of the main religious developments in the Ottoman world, discussing the most recent scholarship in the field.
