Abstract

Catalysis constitutes one of the key points in Hjelmslev’s glossematics. Catalyzation is an overture to the outside, to the substance-matter, to the meaning of form and semiotics: immanence and transcendence are put together in a movement of systoles (contraction in a system of definitions) and diastoles (opening to the undefined, the inhomogeneous).Being of greater extent than a catalyzed entity, the entity is catalysing "syncretism" which manifests as "fusion" but also as "if-then implication ", as argued by Hjelmslev, which shows the value of the interpretation of catalysis.
