Collecting horseradish (Armoracia rusticana, Brassicaceae): local uses and morphological characterization in Basilicata (Southern Italy)

Abstract

A collection of Armoracia rusticanaGaertn., Mey. et Scherb. (horseradish) has beenestablished at the Institute of Plant Genetics--National Research Council--Thematic Centre forthe Preservation of Mediterranean Biodiversitylocated in Policoro (MT). Collecting missions havebeen conducted in internal areas of Basilicata region(South Italy). Ethnobotanical data were collectedusing a set of open-ended and multiple-choicequestionnaires. These information provide an understandingof contemporary uses, agricultural practicesand socio-cultural traditions associated with horseradishpresence in the sites. Data regarding thevariation of 26 morphological descriptors wererecorded and statistically analized. The resultsshowed a significative degree of variability betweenaccessions and represent an instrument to understandperspectives of this plant for the agriculture ofBasilicata region and it is the first step for the description and classification of this local horseradishgermplasm.
