Cherry chlorotic rusty spot and cherry leaf scorch: two similar diseases associated with mycoviruses and double stranded RNAs

Abstract

Cherry chlorotic rusty spot (CCRS) is a disease of unknownetiology affecting sweet and sour cherry in SouthernItaly. CCRS has constantly been associated with thepresence of an unidentified fungus, double-strandedRNAs (dsRNAs) from mycoviruses of the genera Chrysovirus,Partitivirus and Totivirus and two small circularRNAs (cscRNAs) that may be satellite RNAs of one ofthe mycoviruses. The similarity of CCRS and Cherry leafscorch (CLS), a disease caused by the perithecial ascomyceteApiognomonia erythrostoma, is discussed inthe light of symptomatology, fungal fructifications, nucleotidesequence analysis of fungal genes, including the18S rDNA amplified by PCR from infected leaves, andisolated mycelia. Comparison of mycoviral dsRNAs isolatedfrom plants affected by both diseases further supportsthe view that CCRS and CLS are closely related. This is the first report showing the presence of CCRSlikemycoviral dsRNAs in CLS-infected cherry treesfrom Spain, indicating that CCRS-associated mycovirusesare more widely spread than though before.
