A survey of Franciscan convents in Basilicata (Italy). Creation of a GIS for Knowledge, improvement and use of Cultural Heritage

Abstract

Nowadays the recovery and the fruition of documents by electronic supports about architectonic heritage, the development of methods of digital technology that is applied to cultural heritage and the use of new technological and informative systems, are more and more common. Possibilities with this technologies in the planning and the consequent managing of information in cultural heritage field are many and the data digitization is particularly considered the essential part of a course that aims to the development of cultural heritage, An application that is more and more common in the use of new technologies for cultural heritage are GIS (Geographical Information Systems).The GIS came up as instruments for the control of territory. Nowadays they are considered so flexible that they can be applied in different areas of cultural heritage. We are observing a movement of the specific functional features of GIS to the field of the conservation of existing architectonic heritage, above all of the historical and monumental buildings. So urban scales are left to reach different levels of representation to get the typical ones of architectonic artifact. This Geographical Information System for the systematic scheduling of Franciscan convents in Basilicata (Italy) implements technologies of GIS analysis. With them the common features of the convents are pointed out immediately and so we can create tabs, that are converted in special formats and link artifacts with thematic segments dynamically: a precious source for an innovative analysis instrument, with the purpose to conserve and then develop the whole system of Franciscan convents.
