Abstract

The hagiographic theme, already central in modern historiography, continues to have a singular fortune even in contemporary historiography. The aim of the paper is to follow the evolution of hagiographical models from the time of Theodosius to the pontificate of Gregory the Great. As narration of the life of exemplar Christians, perfect imitators of Christ, Christian biographies, beyond the miraculous elements that mostly characterize them, can be a privileged point of view for understanding the evolution of Christian identity and the very idea of holiness. The Christian biographies of these centuries (IV-VI) show us, on one hand, the news they represent compared with the pagan historiography and biography, on the other hand, the evolution of previous hagiographic model, the martyrial model.
