Myth and tragedy: red-figure pottery and verbal communication in central and northern Apulia in the later fourth century BC

Abstract

The article selects a group of Italiote vases with mythological scenes proven coming from Italic sites and already regarded as derived, in their iconography, from Attic tragic drama. Through a new philological analysis, both of vascular scenes and historical and cultural context of the vessels, it is discussed theatrical derivation of the images, even on the basis of linguistic reasons.
