MICRO X-RAY LAB: AN X-RAY LABORATORY FOR STUDYING RECYCLED AND TRANSFORMED MATERIALS
Abstract
Background and purpose: Recycling waste materials by transformation into new useful products requires that both the starting raw material and the transformed commodity are chemically and physically characterized for safety and quality issues. In this context, X-ray analyses can provide valuable tools to non-destructively investigate the chemical composition as well as the internal structure of materials with trace-level sensitivity and (sub)micrometric resolution. Methods: At the Micro X-ray Lab different new generation X-ray-based instruments are available: a X-ray powder diffractometer (XRPD), a portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (pXRF), a wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), a total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (TXRF), a micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (μXRF), a high resolution X-ray microtomograph (μCT), and a variable pressure field emission scanning electron microscope (VP-FESEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). Results and Conclusions: The instrumentations available at the Micro X-ray Lab allow for fast non destructive chemical analyses of all types of solids and liquids, powders, suspensions and particles, from bulky materials down to nanometer sized samples. In addition, 2D chemical mapping and 3D volume rendering of different types of raw and transformed materials is possible. Such combined X-ray approach is used to support the development of new technologies in recycling waste materials.
