Intestinal regulatory T cells: Their function and modulation by dietary nutrients

Abstract

Regulatory T cells either of thymic derivation or induced peripherally play an important role in the suppression of autoimmune and inflammatory disease. In this review, the classification and function of regulatory T cells will be illustrated in healthy conditions and disease. Furthermore, the modulation of regulatory T cells by various dietary products will be described. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of vitamin A and D metabolites, pre- and probiotics, fatty acids and polyphenols. These natural products are also able to modulate the intestinal microbiota, which in turn shapes the gut immunity, including the induction of regulatory T cells.
