Abstract

A new analysis of the Greek inscription in honour of the young Tettichos. Among different chronological hypotheses, is preferred, for epigraphical reasons, the period between 575 and 550 B. C. and, therefore, Tettichos died in the war between Athenians and Megarians for the possession of island of Salamis. The anthroponym Tetticos, derived from tettix-igos, «cricket», remembers the custom of the Athenian aristocrats to pin up their hair with clips in the form of gold crickets. The noble family of the fallen young man in a fight against the Megarians could be the family of Alcmaeonidae who got rich through the gold given to the ancestor Alcmaeon at the court of Sardis.
