Abstract

It can be useful for the life within the vici to be able to write and read: we can find traces of this in the authors de re rustica, but also in some passages of the latin literature (e.g. Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Jounger). In this article we collect and analyse some evidences both juridical and epigraphic to testify that magistri primae litterae teach the rudiments of writing in the villages. We examine how this form of teaching was organized and what is the goal of this practice. The results of this research offer a contribution to the debate about the Roman alphabetization and its spread in the countryside.
