Erosion Risk on Coastal Zones
Abstract
The risk that an object is damaged by one or more hazardous events is usually calculated using a function R = f(H,V,E) where H (hazard) is the probability that a harmful situation occurs to a defined object or territory and in a defined time interval , V (vulnerability) is the ability of an object or territory to resist to the event and E (Exposed value) is the extent of the damage suffered by the object or territory itself Then, we can calculate coastal erosion risk through the analysis of a multidisciplinary geo-indicators set, aiming to describe the physical, environmental and socio-economic factors participating to the definition of “H”, “V” and “E”; “H” should be the indicators describing the mechanisms of coastal dynamic, while “V” and “E” geo-indicators measure the morphologic (“V”) and socio-economic “E” vulnerability. The indicators to be used are to be selected by a direct analysis of the indicator properties related to the following characteristics: 1. ability of representing the environment 2. easiness to be populated 3. easiness of its interpretation 4. sensibility to interpret the changes 5. different scale applicability 6. comparability with a threshold value The risk calculation algorithm is based on the aggregation method of the selected indicators. Then first we have three groups of indicators associated the parameter "H", "V" or "E" and, secondly, we determine the hierarchical criteria for assigning a “weight” coefficients to the indicators of the three groups "H", "V" or "E" as we have to identify the most significant indicator to represent “H” “V” and “E”. The hazard "H", the vulnerability "V" and the socio-economic "E" can be obtained as the average value of the indicators homogenized by applying the “weight” coefficients. The final function R = f (H, V, E) is given by the average value of “H”, “V” and “E”. The method has been applied to the Apulian (Italy) stretch of coast between Barletta and Margherita di Savoia.
