Abstract

Man’s house has always been influenced by environmental, natural and cultural conditions; trees, rocks, sand, water, habits of people and animals are all elements linked by dependencies and balance effected each other. This research shows how extraordinary is the cultural and architectural heritage about experience of the houses in Cairo; and even though it has no the value of a real “handbook” explaining “how to do something”, it contains all the information about the “environmental sustainability”. The archetype of the house in Cairo already appears in the ancient city of al-Fustat where we find the first examples. The house in Cairo is an example of how the places have always embodied the sense of belonging to the own community. These examples show that the architecture is justified by specific formal, cultural, environmental,social and economical needs, through an organic formal and stylistic conception which measures and builds the common sense of life, the symbol of family and of the domestic as well as religious life
