Un paradiso in terra. Il hammām e l’economia della salvezza

Abstract

"A Paradise on Earth. The hammam and the Economy of Salvation". The adoption and adaptation of the late-antique practice of the public baths in early Islam gave rise to contrasting responses among religious scholars. Many early authorities objected to this practice on ritual and moral grounds, while the mainstream ultimately approved of its use. The problematic status of the bathhouse in Islamic religious culture is imaginatively expressed through the eschatological symbolism associated with it. This paper examines the evolution of this symbolism through time, from the 8th century traditions about the invention of baths by Solomon’s jinns to the 17th century story of Abu Sir and Abu Qir in the "Thousand and one nights". It draws on a wide range of sources, including Sufi works by Ibn ‘Arabi (d. 1240) and Sha‘rani (d. 1565) and the hammam treatises by Munawi (d. 1622) and Kawkabani (d. 1740).
