Abstract

A new interpretation of Propert. 4.11.65-66 enables us to suggest a dating of the Lex Iulia de adulteriis to the beginning of the summer of 17 BC, after the Ludi saeculares and before the election of the consuls for the 16 BC. This dating suggests a more organic placement of the lex Iulia de adulteriis in the context of Augustan criminal reforms. The essay is derived from a scientific dialogue with the unforgettable Tullio Spagnuolo Vigorita.
