Abstract

This essay reconstructs the elements on which are based the reception of the novelistic tradition in the Italian narrative production of Ferdinand von Saar and the traces of an Italienbild in the work of the same writer. The genre of the frame narrative in German-language literature of the 19th century owes much to Italian literary tradition, yet Saar himself as a portraitist rather than a novelist and, in his preference for the pictorial-descriptive element instead of the event, is separated from the Italian model. The issue is addressed through the analysis of several short stories and a biographical reconstruction of the Italian stages in the life of Saar.
