Abstract

In the Archaeological Museum of Bari (IT) there are 294 Alexandrian coins (283 billon tetra¬drachms and 11 bronze coins) dating from the reign of Augustus to the time of Constantius Caesar. The group of coins includes issues attributable to about thirty different authorities. The number of coins relating to the first two centuries of the Empire is scarce; it increases in the period of the first half of the third century and, finally, is high in the second half of the same century. Due to the lack of information about the places and circumstances of their discovery and when and how they reached the Museum, we can only advance hypothesis regarding their collection. However, on the basis of information regarding the diffusion of Alexandrian coins outside Egypt, we can say that such coins didn’t circulate in ancient Apulia.
