Materials, Forms and Models in the St Philip Church of Hierapolis: Byzantine Architectural Elements

Abstract

The paper analyses a part of the sculptural elements of the Byzantine era (from the late 5th cent. to the 9th-10th cent.) from the excavation of the St Philip Church in Hierapolis. The first part contains an initial classification of the repertoire of forms on the base of the better preserved sculptural and architectural blocks, identifying comparisons both within the city itself and in the production of other centres in Asia Minor. The second part examines the results that emerged from the archaeometric analyses of the marbles used in the church, and seeks to trace a map of their initial distribution taking into particular account the type of materials and whether or not they were reused.
