La borghesia transnazionale nella crisi dello spazio politico nazionale

Abstract

The essay discusses the formation of a transnational bourgeoisie (transnational capitalist class) and its implications for liberal democracy and the crisis of politics. The emergence of a transnational actor with embryonic systems of discussion and decision represents a significant exemplification of the transformations in the global-local relationship and it is part of a context that Saskia Sassen has shown in terms of the emerging sociology of globalization. The contribution will show the multiple dimensions of the emerging global transnational capitalist class and focus the discussion on the power of decision that the availability of important economic and cultural resources gives to an extremely limited number of individuals. The analysis of this new social actor provides an opportunity to reflect on the political power in the global society and to discuss the issues of consensus and participation of the liberal democracies at a time of weakness of the system of nation-states. The essay ends by showing the contribution that scaling revealed by the analysis of social stratification can offer to the scientific debate on the global society and political crisis.
