Abstract

The article offers a reinterpretation of the paean to Dionysus written by Philodamus Scarpheus (iv BC), which contains the first evidence of competitions of circular choruses at the Pythian Games of Delphi. It explores the relationship between Philip and the Macedonians and the Greek competitions, and reconstructs the historical and political context in which the paean was performed. As such, the article highlights the role played by Philip II of Macedon in the prescription of the events described in the paean and it identifies political and eulogistic intentions in parts of the mythical narrative.
