The Revenant in Albanian Languages and Culture: A Brief Overview

Abstract

The following essay analyzes the terms used to refer to the Revenant in Albanian literature and popular culture, i. "the Dead, returning with malicious intentions", and against which certain calamity practices are used to prevent his return to the world of the living. With regard to the complex of beliefs in which the expressions are involved, the term "neutral" term Revenant is used here instead of the term vampire, because in the collective consciousness it is now associated with a number of very specific features (such as bloodsucking, pale and emaciated appearance, pronounced sensuality) and because it is in its innumerable cinematic and literary variants have very little in common with the forms of popular culture. All expressions are analyzed in terms of their semantics, usage, dialectal distribution and etymology. The basis of this analysis are their testimonies in the Albanian Literatur1 as well as the entries in the (incomplete) card index of the Albanian lexicon, generously available to me by Prof. Emil Lafe were made.
