Abstract

Provided herein are processes for the synthesis of 3-(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid in the ( R ) or ( S ) configuration in which the first step is the desymmetrisation of 3- iso butylglutaric anhydride by reaction with thiols or alcohols. Also provided are thioester intermediates of formulae (I), (II) and (III).
