METHODS OF MANUFACTURING PANELS OF COMPOSITE MATERIAL REINFORCED WITH CLOSED-SECTION STRINGERS

Abstract

Stringers (13) of fiber-reinforced polymerizable thermosetting composite material are applied on a skin panel (11). Inserts (40) of rubber material, having a solid cross section, are placed in cavities (14) between the stringers and the skin panel. The rubber material of the inserts has thermal expansion and shrinkage coefficients greater than the thermal expansion and shrinkage coefficients of the thermosetting composite material of the stringers. After the polymerization of the composite material in an autoclave, the inserts are allowed to cool, whereby the inserts undergo a thermal shrinkage of greater magnitude than the thermal shrinkage undergone by the cured panel (10). The inserts (40) are then removed longitudinally from the cavities (14).
